Spotify cranks up classical music content with Naxos deal

Spotify, the subscription and ad-supported music streaming service, has struck a deal with the world’s leading classical music label, Naxos.

The agreement will give users access to one of the largest and fastest growing catalogues of state-of-the-art classical recordings available, bolstering Spotify’s efforts to offer increasingly eclectic and varied musical content.

The deal with Naxos, founded in 1987 by German-born entrepreneur Klaus Heymann, will allow users access to over 100,000 exclusive tracks across 2,500-plus titles – from established greats Beethoven, Mozart and Handel to less-well-known composers including Arnold, Bax, Dupre and Field.

Naxos covers all genres of classical music as well as a global selection of jazz, folk and popular music from the first half of the 20th Century. Its catalogue also covers Japanese and Spanish classics as well as organ and guitar-based music.

The label joins Spotify alongside Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music, Warner Music Group, Merlin, The Orchard and, most recently, CD Baby.

Daniel Ek, founder and CEO at Spotify, says: “We are committed to developing the world’s biggest music catalogue and our deal with Naxos reconfirms our intention to offer the most diverse.”

Spotify will provide further detail of the new Naxos content as it continues to be added over the next few weeks.
